Tom Lavoie's background as a photographer

My passion for photography began with capturing images on a Sony Mavica while on tour in Europe as a professional trumpet player in 2001 and 2002. Frustration with the limitations of this early digital camera in the dim light of cathedrals and opera houses motivated me to upgrade my equipment and begin a lifetime of learning and developing my skills as a photographer.

Subsequently I have studied photography and post-processing  with some of the world's most noted photographers including Jay Maisel, George DeWolfe, Rick Sammon, Joe McNally, Scott Kelby, Tony Corbell, Vincent Versace, Robert Beck, as well as others. I have also studied composition with artist Marylin Tully Ward.

Together with my photo partner, Medora Hebert, we have shot weddings, advertising, portraits, and exhibited fine art photography. Our clientele has included Tom Rush, Dartmouth Mary Hitchcock Hospital, The Global Health Council in Washington, DC as well as others. One of my photographs has been acquired by the Portsmouth Public Library special collections.

My experience includes coordinating photography for The Great Waters Music Festival, lecturing for The Osher Lifelong learning Institute, and teaching photography at Granite State College. I am a juried member of The NH Art Association, member of The New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists, am active as a lecturer and instructor of photography/Photoshop/Lightroom and have served on the photography advisory board for The Creteau Regional Technology Center. My ongoing projects have included research expeditions with the Cave Research Foundation, Mardi Gras Street photography in New Orleans and cataloguing  collections of artifacts for the Seacoast African American Cultural Center.
